No. 7 Dormer, Bristol
A family home reimagined for everyday life, together and apart

- No. 7 Dormer is the full refurbishment of a classic Bristolian semi-detached townhouse, transformed into a warm, light-filled home that responds intuitively to the rhythm of busy family life. Designed in close collaboration with a family of four, including mum, dad, and their two boys, the project became a shared effort to reimagine a much-loved house so it could support both the pace and the pause of everyday living.
The ground floor was carefully restructured and lightly extended at the rear to create an open kitchen and dining space, while the existing lounge was enlarged to give the whole family room to unwind. A new downstairs WC and compact laundry nook were tucked into the layout, and desk space was carved out for the boys, giving them a dedicated spot for homework within view of the kitchen. At the entrance, bespoke storage and a new window brought both function and natural light to what had previously been a chaotic drop zone for school bags and coats.
Upstairs, the first floor was reconfigured to introduce a generous new family bathroom, still likely to be fought over as mum joked, alongside enlarged bedrooms and essential storage space. A new stair was added to access the converted loft, which now houses a peaceful principal bedroom with en suite. This top-floor retreat offers much-needed calm and separation for mum and dad, while keeping them connected to the heart of the home.
The rear garden was subtly reworked to define zones for family life without over-designing. The old garage, previously underused and structurally failing, was rebuilt with a new pitched roof and a clear purpose. It now houses a quiet office for mum, with a yoga space in the roof above, providing balance between work, movement, and stillness.
No. 7 Dormer is a home shaped not just by architecture, but by the lives unfolding within it. It is a space that holds the noise, the mess, the laughter, and the pause, with thoughtful details that make daily life just a little more effortless.
