The Downs, Clifton, Bristol

Architecture that reflects the rhythm of family life

Set on the edge of Bristol’s Clifton Downs, this full refurbishment and extension transformed a dated cottage into a warm, light-filled home for a family of four and their three dogs. The brief called for openness, flow, and a practical elegance that could support daily life while feeling calm and connected.

We reconfigured the ground floor to create a continuous sequence of spaces, subtly defined but visually fluid, designed to mirror the natural rhythm of the day. At the centre sits a bespoke kitchen, imagined as the social heart of the home, with views to the garden and strong links to dining and living spaces.

Functionality was embedded at every level: integrated storage, a laundry room, dog wash, cloakroom, EV charging, and a home office positioned within the active zones of the house to keep work and life connected. Upstairs, we introduced a new principal suite with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, and reimagined the children’s bedrooms to suit their evolving needs.

Modest front and rear extensions allowed us to unlock spatial generosity without losing the home’s scale or charm. Gardens were designed as true extensions of the interior; framed, accessible, and ready for hosting or quiet evening retreat. The result is a home that feels considered and effortless; tailored to the family it was designed for.
